Dear Friends,

I returned recently from a trip to the Galapagos Islands and Florida.  The most amazing experience on Galapagos is that animals are not afraid of humans.  Unfortunately I did not see as much as I would have like to see, so I would like to go back....

I shall begin with a couple of birds:

1. Swallow-tailed Gull (Creagus furcatus)

2.Yellow Warbler (Dendroica petechia), this bird is the first bird to start singing in the morning

3. Lava Heron (Butoides sudevalli)

4. Galapagos Mockingbird (Nesomimus pavulus)

5. Darwin's Finch (Geospiza spec.). I did not have the oportunity to study these birds carefully.  It is said that they inspired Darwin to come up with the theory of evolution. There are 13 different species of finches.  They are small, dark birds, not at all shy.

6. Vermillon Flycatcher (Pyrocephalus rubinus)

7. Galapagos Penguin (Spheniscus mendiculus), the northernmost of all penguins

8,9,10. Magnificent Frigatbird (Fregata mgnificens) male displaying, young chick, yearling

11. Blue footed Booby (Sula nebouxii), mother with freshly hatched chick

12. Whimbrel (Numenius phaeopus)

13. Brown Pelican (Pelicanus occidentalis urinator), these birds accompany fishing boats

14. Sanderling (Calidris alba)

15. Galapagos Dove (Zenaida galapgoensis)

16. Rufous collared Sparrow (Zonotricia apensis), photographed in Quito, Ecuador

Enjoy, Ruthie
